My Mommy Must Haves (0-3 Months)

Well, I may have not been a Mommy for very long, but I have come to realize what products/items I can't live without! My experience as a nanny for 10+ years also helps in knowing what makes life much easier with a munchkin. Most items I'm about to share with you can be found on Amazon (one of my obsessions.. I mean if you have Prime, how can you not want to shop all the time?)

This is a motion monitor that lies underneath your child's mattress. It detects movement. If movement hasn't been felt for 15 seconds it goes off. There are a few different models you can buy. This model below is the one we have, it has 2 sensor pads. I chose this because if you have only one, that doesn't cover much of the baby's sleeping space. If the baby moves off of the sensor, the alarm will sound. So with 2, I am covering more "crib real estate". We have had a few false alarms. Sometimes Levi will line up perfectly in between the two pads.. little stinker! There are a lot of different options you can choose with the parent unit (the thing that stays in your room). It tells you the temperature of the baby's room (you can have an alarm sound if it goes out of the temperature range you want), you can turn the sound on so you can hear the baby, there is a ticking sound option that lightly beeps every 2-3 seconds letting you know baby is breathing (annoying though). I couldn't live without this thing! Even if we didn't put Levi to sleep on his tummy I would still use it! It's so nice to just roll over and see the ticker moving instead of having to get up and check on him (although I still do occasionally lol).
The picture below is not the exact one we have, but it looks pretty nice! At first, I didn't register for one of these because I was all "I'll never use it". YEA RIGHT. We've used it every day since day one. It's so nice to just set the baby down when you have to go to the bathroom, eat dinner, do laundry, whatever. I honesty don't know what I would do without it! The one we have has a bar of things hanging above baby that can be removed. It's nice for them to have something to look at and play with.

This is something I began to use around the 8 week mark. He is still a little tiny for it, but he still fits. They make an infant insert (which I had no idea about until writing this post) to fit tiny babies better. I choose this wrap over the Moby when I want him to be more awake or I can tell he wants to be more alert. This wrap gives him a better opportunity to look around. This  carrier is great as they get bigger.. so it will definitely be on my "must have" list for a long time. This carrier is a bit expensive, but definitely worth it. I am thankful to have mine given to me (Thanks Heather!)

Initially we didn't have one of these. I probably ordered it when Levi was 6 weeks or so. I wish I would of had it from the very beginning because I know he would of loved it! I definitely recommend having one of these from the get go. Babies just love to lay and look at things, even when they don't know how to grab at things yet. Levi just starting batting at the toys at 12 weeks. Before this, he would just lay and look around. This also teaches them "self play", which I think is very important to teach early on. I like to give Levi about 10 minutes of this with me being out of his direct sight, but close by to monitor him. He is learning to have independent play and not count on Mama (or Daddy!) to always entertain him. The model below is the exact one we have and I love it. The great thing about it is that it collapses and folds up.. great for travel!

I have a somewhat of a love/hate relationship with the Moby Wrap, but I still love having it. It is GREAT for infant babies... they show that you can carry a bigger baby in it, but it just looks awkward to me, I'll probably switch to the Ergo when he gets bigger. But for this stage of life, I highly recommend it. It makes them feel so snuggly and almost always puts baby to sleep! When Levi was teeny weeny I would put him in this while shopping and he'd sleep the whole time. I actually did it recently (probably when he was 10 weeks) and he slept 1.5 hours in it while I grocery shopped. The picture below shows the baby's legs hanging out. We haven't tried that hold yet. We are still doing the "newborn hug hold" which has baby's feet tucked in so they're in the fetal position. Now not all babies like this wrap. I have some friends with little ones who HATE being constricted in this thing. My little guy loves it though. It's very comfortable. Here's what I don't like about it: takes some practice learning how to put it on, takes a while to put on, and it's so long that it drags on the floor while putting it on (ew). These are things I can live with since it makes Levi happy. We'll see how much use I get out of it!

So the picture below obviously isn't Levi haha. It's some "girl" apparently, since her shirt says so (thank God for that). But as you can see her passy is being held buy a "pacifier clip". I LOVE THESE THINGS and could NOT live without them. Without them, you will quickly see how frustrating it is to bend over and pick up a passy when it falls out of the baby's mouth, which happens about 1000 times a day by the way. The only thing I don't like about them is they have too much slack, so sometimes it will still hit the floor or table, yuck. But it is very beneficial when you are holding the baby, because when it falls out you don't have to bend over and get it.

You will want one of these, maybe even two indefinitely! The picture below is the exact one we have. I highly recommend the ones with the raised bed feature for when baby is little. Levi still sleeps in his raised up at 3 months old. This is so great because it will save you from buying a bassinet (which are pointless to me) because this can fit in your room and you will use it until the child is probably 3 (for napping/sleeping while not at home). This one also has the napper/changer feature as well which is great. If you choose to put baby on his back, the napper feature is awesome because it's a little elevated and keeps baby nice and snug. All you have to do is flip it over to change a diaper, it's great! We DO use our AngelCare monitor with the Pack 'n Play. We bought a separate mattress that is made just for the Pack n' Play. So the monitor lays flat on top of the hard flat piece that comes with the Pack n' Play, then we lay the extra mattress on top. Even if you don't have the monitor I recommend that additional mattress, it's a little softer than the flat piece that comes with it. When Levi starts to sit up and play on his own, this will be set up in our living room so I can put him in it to play if I need to tend to other things. And break down/set up is a breeze once you master it!

Sleeper Sacks/Gowns

I know this one is for a girl, but you get the idea! These are SO GREAT because they are minimal hassle and keep the baby cozy without using a blanket. I suggest getting a ton of these. Make sure the baby's room is cool, though, if you plan on putting them in one because they are usually made of a fleece material. They make diaper changes a breeze in the middle of the night; just zip down, change, zip up and done! You can find them practically anywhere.

I bet you're wondering why the heck this is on my list.. well I'll tell you why. When you're on the go and have a bottle that needs to be heated up, but have no means of doing it, this is a life saver! Pour very hot water in it before you leave home (it should keep warm for about 4 hours) and dunk your bottle (or breast milk bag.. which is much faster by the way!) in it and let it sit until it reaches the desired temperature. I'm not sure how this works with other bottles, but we have Dr. Brown's and you have to unscrew the stop or else it will leak, weird I know... something with the pressure I guess. The longer you need the water to last, the hotter you need to make it initially. For example, if I'm leaving the house and the baby will eat in 1 hour, I would put warm/hot water in it. If baby was going to eat in 3-4 hours, I'd put near boiling water in it. I hope that makes sense. Also, make sure you get one that will fit the size bottle you have.

Well, there are many other things I use daily, but they are your typical items that most any Mom would use. These are just a few things I thought I would share with you because some of them you may not of even though about.. but they have been very helpful to us! I plan on posting these for every baby stage. Hope this helps! Please contact me if you have any questions!!

Little Levi: 3 Months Old

Hi! This is Levi, coming to you with a 3 month update.

I don't have any measurements to give this month because I didn't have a "Well Baby" check up this month. I did, however, go to the pediatrician to get some shots because Mom and Dad chose to do a delayed vaccination schedule. So 2 of the shots I didn't get at my 2 month appointment, I got this month. Otherwise, I wouldn't of gone to the pediatrician at all. When I turn 4 months I'll have a "Well Baby" check up, I'm sure I will have grown a whole lot! Mommy and Daddy really hate to vaccinate me at all, especially because this time I was sick the next day (I had a low grade fever and was fussy). And they especially hate that it hurts me, only momentarily though. This time, I was over it in 5 seconds. Since it's hard to get into schools without vaccinations, they chose to do it... but they chose the delayed schedule (or alternative schedule) so that I don't have so many chemicals and whatnot in my system at the same time. I'm just a baby for crying out loud!

I'm definitely starting to be a little more vocal.. I coo and make little noises, and sometimes I think "was that me?" and it startles me. But everyone finds it pretty darn cute.

I went to the church nursery for the first time. The ladies loved watching me, they said I did great! Mom and Dad really enjoyed being able to enjoy the sermon/worship without me being there as a distraction.. and I enjoyed being with other little babies! It's a pet peeve of Mommy's that people don't put their kids in children's church. It's such a great resource, why not use it?!

I am also a pro at holding my head up like a boss without any assistance. When I'm being held, I just sit up like a little person. I also tried my Johnny Jump Up (a bouncer that hangs from door frame) and although I'm still a bit small for it, I can hold my head up just fine in it. I mostly like to lean over and suck on the edges.

I also started grabbing/swatting at my toys on my floor gym! Before you know it I will be reaching for everything!

Here are some pics of me at 3 months old...

Now, watch me compose a masterpiece!

Infant sleep.. against the grain

I've really wrestled with whether or not to post this.. but I've decided to do it because maybe it will even help one person who may be struggling with this decision. And at the end of the day, we are the parents... we make the choices for our child.

Many people close to us know we decided from the beginning to place Levi to sleep on his tummy, despite the "Back to Sleep" (BTS) campaign. No we are not careless. Yes we love our son more than anything, which is why we feel this is the best decision for him. I think it's very sad so many parents are backed into a corner out of sheer terror to make their babies sleep on their backs. I know of so many parents (most won't admit it!) that wrestle with how to put their baby to bed because of what pediatricians say, even though their instincts may be telling them something else. But I have done my research... please read these articles below.

I really feel more research needs to be done on this matter. Yes, SIDS rates dropped after the BTS campaign, but there are a lot of factors that aren't shared. In how many of the cases  was sleeping prone the ONLY factor? (bedding environment was very safe.. tight fitted sheet, no blankets, no second hand smoke, comfortable room temp, sleeping alone in crib, ect). This information is almost impossible to find, because there hasn't been a study correlating SIDS and prone sleep ONLY. Doctors cannot say that sleeping prone is a cause for SIDS.. after all, there are no known causes. It just happens, unfortunately. They only are going off of the decrease in SIDS after most parents started placing infants on their backs. But again, I think a lot more factors are involved. You should also note that some infant deaths were labeled as SIDS although they really weren't (suffocation was most likely the cause). The guidelines for cause of death to be SIDS is a lot more strict than it was when BTS started. Also, the determining factors of SIDS varies from coroner to coroner.. which really needs to be changed.. there should be a universal method in determining this.

And another thing that I always go back to.. I was placed on my tummy, so was Jake, and so were our parents, and their parents. The recommendation used to be for infants to be on their stomachs because of the adverse effects of supine (back) sleep (you will see there are many disadvantages).

I am the only Mom in my immediate circle of Mom friends that does this (that I know of), which is why I was hesitant to share. I don't want to be called a bad Mom.. but before 1992 when 70+% of Moms were putting their babies to bed on their tummies, were they bad Moms? No. And neither am I. If you look on a lot of community boards on websites such as The Bump, Baby Center, What to Expect When You're Expecting.. you will see a lot of Moms struggling with this. They want to do it, and notice their child sleeps so much better when they do, but they're scared to death of SIDS (which any good Mom is!!). Hopefully the research I've provided will help. And more Moms do this than you think.. just go to the community boards and you'll see hundreds of Moms "admit" they do this. We shouldn't be so ashamed of how we want our babies to sleep! And Pediatricians shouldn't be so rude and condescending when we choose to do so.. I'm sure even they were put to sleep on their belly!

An item we have that helps us be even more confident about tummy sleep is the Angel Care Motion Monitor. We have the one with 2 pads, for even more sensitivity. I'm not saying our child's life is dependent on this monitor, but it certainly helps to give us some peace of mind. I still get up and check on Levi a handful of times a night.. and I would do that even if he slept on his back (babies still die of SIDS on their backs, too).

I am thankful for the work the researchers do.. but I really think they need to dive deeper. We wouldn't have a population of 6 billion people if tummy sleep didn't work when done safely.

So, why did we decide to go against the "doctor's orders"?

Initial reasons we choose this route...
-we feel it's more natural for a baby to sleep this way. He also sleeps longer and more sound (sleep is so important to a developing baby!). Research shows babies lose 4 hours of sleep a day when sleeping on their back as opposed to their tummy. This is one reason for the adverse affect of delayed development, which I'll share about shortly.
-we feel better knowing if he spits up, it will come out onto his mattress instead of going back down his throat. There isn't really any concrete evidence that a child will choke on spit up if on their back (although pediatricians used to say this!), but in our minds, it makes more sense. (PS we have seen him choke on his spit up on his back while changing a diaper.. we had to grab him and flip him over and hit him on the back to breathe! That was reason enough for us)
-He lifted his head at 1 day old while on his tummy.. we knew he could move his head side to side.
-Generations upon generations before us did this (I understand guidelines change over time, but I am still not 100% on board with the BTS campaign)

Secondary reasons we choose to stick with this method after researching...
-Before BTS, "flat head syndrome" (plagiocephaly) was pretty rare. Ever since the BTS campaign, 1 in 60 babies develop it. It is generally just cosmetic, but can permanently change how their head is shaped if not corrected. Methods to correct it include changing babies head position frequently during sleep (really? Going into your child's room every hour to flip their head side to side? C'mon), wearing a helmet for a few months, and sometimes surgery is required.

Baby with Flat Head Syndrome

Levi's head (Sorry for poor quality pic.. it's hard to get a profile shot of a baby who moves!)

-Delay in motor development, social skills and cognitive ability. Research shows babies who sleep on their backs reach milestones later than those who sleep on their bellies. Usually by 18 months they are at the same level, but there can be long term affects in some instances (Some think some cases of autism has thought to maybe be related.. no long term studies have been done, so it hard to know what the long term affect can be)
-The list of adverse effects of supine sleep is quite lengthy (torticollis, shoulder issues, increase in sleep apnea, hip subluxation, jaw difficulties, ect, ect)

If your baby is a happy back sleeper, then I am SO happy for you! That takes one worry off of your mind. Even if Levi slept soundly on his back, I would still consider tummy sleep for all of the reasons fore mentioned. This blog post is certainly not to tell you what to do.. it is just explaining why we do what we do! I'm sure a lot of people think we're crazy and that's fine. But at least you know our reasoning!

Incase you haven't noticed, we are not conventional parents.. we go against the grain on a lot of things. The way we chose to labor was what started it all! All parents will choose what they feel is best. I hope, though, that you question/research things before implementing them. Like your Mama always said "If your friends jumped off of a bridge, would you do it, too?"

For an additional read, read this blog post... she feels the same way I do!

PS please no negative comments. I honor your parenting decisions, please honor ours.
